Prison Ministry Workshops Announced

Posted: February 05th, 2014

Will Andrews (PhD Student) shared information on two upcoming workshops on Prison Ministry:

2014 Spring Lay Academy for the Chicago Southern District United Methodist Church
Saturday, March 1, and  Saturday, March 8, 2014 (a two-part workshop)

“I was in prison and you visited me: Integral Ministry with Prisoners and their Families”

Currently the United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country in the world and it is the only western democratic nation that continues using the death penalty.  How should a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth respond to this crisis?  How should we respond as the church?  In this workshop we will explore the challenges and possibilities by addressing the following themes:

  • The biblical basis for ministry with prisoners and their families
  • The lived reality of the incarcerated and their families
  • The variety of ministries that a church can undertake
  • Steps for starting this work in your church
  • A model of a welcoming and healing congregation
