ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
The Council of Swaziland Churches headquarters is located in Manzini. Although Manzini is the second largest “city” in Swaziland it is not a “big city.” It is a small town with a population of approximately 78,000 people. Most goods and services are located in the city center which is easily accessible through public transportation. Swaziland is Africa’s last absolute monarchy. It is ruled by King Mswati III with some consultation with traditional chiefs and the democratically elected prime minister and parliament. Swazis adhere to traditional and constitutional (western inspired) laws. Swazis have enjoyed years of peace. Swaziland has two official languages, English and Swait. Although Swati is the language of preference for Swazis and will be used most often in public gathers.
STUDENT PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
The assignment is divided between administration duties in the main office in Manzini and visiting member churches and axillaries and Council projects around the country. Swaziland is a small country and it takes approximately three hours to travel from one side of the country to the other side. Most of the travel will not require overnight accommodation.
STUDENT PLACEMENT EXPECTATIONS:
A candidate for this position should have had some cross-cultural training, able to adapt to the slower pace of life in Swaziland and traditional cultural norms. In addition, the candidate should have strong written and verbal communication. Experience evaluating and creating programs is desirable.
PHILOSOPHY OF STUDENT SUPERVISION:
Supervisor for weekly one-hour supervision session with appointee/student: Justice, Peace, and Reconciliation Department head and the General Secretary of the Council of Swaziland Church, Rev. Bonginkosi Malaza.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS:
Estimated travel cost: $5,000 (six month assignment- includes roundtrip travel, lodging and meals)
